Therapist and Teachers from the Outpost Schools Team are using LEGO to build students’ social competency. Using the evidence-based and popular LEGO Therapy approach designed by Dr. Daniel LeGoff, students are interacting with others whilst playing with LEGO.

On January 20, all LEGO Legends were called to join Telethon Speech & Hearing for a Harry Potter themed morning packed with LEGO building activities and projects to practice negotiating, talking, collaborating, listening, eye contact, instruction giving and problem solving.

Telethon Speech & Hearing’s LEGO Holiday Club aims to encourage students to initiate more conversations and to keep them going for more communicative turns. Working together with other students in a group dynamic also encourages students to talk about new topics and be less rigid in their interests.

Upon arrival at Wembley, our LEGO Legends were issued with a Hogwarts Express train ticket that took them through a morning of LEGO building and challenges. A sorting hat quickly organised the students into their Hogwarts Houses of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

All students showed great perseverance building together so that they could earn points for their House. Points were achieved for working well together,  demonstrating turn-taking, collaboration, negotiation and problem solving. Points were also earned for winning LEGO building challenges.

The Houses were all in contention to win but the final challenge awarded Gryffindor and Hufflepuff with a lead position. It was decided that a quick game of chance would be used to select the overall winning House, and that fell in Gryffindor’s hands!

During the session, students enjoyed lunch and sampling Harry Potter jellybeans. There were jellybeans for everyone but not flavours for everyone as some ranged from watermelon to soap!

The morning was enjoyed by all with many students rating it 10/10 with comments like "I will definitely be back" and "the best was making LEGO and friends".

We look forward to welcoming the students back in the April holidays for another bewitching Harry Potter LEGO event!
