(Outpost students from St Stephen’s School, Duncraig)
It was a clear, sunny Monday afternoon. As Luke and I walked down to the docks, we saw the Leeuwin 2. From where we were standing, the mast looked massive. We didn’t feel nervous, but we wondered what we would be doing until dinner. Would we be climbing the netting at the front? What would the food be like? What bunks would we be sleeping in?
There were lots of other kids there, all different ages. We had to get our temperature checked (Covid times) and then found our bunks. There were triple bunks and I got the top one and Luke got the middle one. It was great.
We did lots of different things like learning riddles, tying knots, climbing the rigging, playing quoits and star gazing. Dinner was spaghetti and meatballs, eaten down in the cabin and there was a cooked breakfast early the next morning. Our favourite things were putting the sails up and climbing the rigging. At times it felt a bit like you were flying as the ship moved with the waves, rocking forwards and backwards, even though we were in port. It was a really relaxing experience. It made us both feel so calm and quiet, as if we were in another dimension. It was rather magical but in a purposeful and controlled way.
Overall, it was super fun and we really enjoyed it and want to go next year when we get the chance to actually go sailing on the seas on the Leeuwin. If you get the opportunity to take part next year, we really encourage you to do so, you’ll love it! But mind you don’t fall out of the bunks!
