At Telethon Speech & Hearing, we believe all children should be able to express their needs and wants, feelings and thoughts. However, some children may need special encouragement and support to do this.
Do you know a late talker?
We are delighted to announce that we still have a few spots available in our Talkabout Program for 2023 (for children born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018).
Telethon Speech & Hearing’s Talkabout program is a specialised language service for children who are experiencing a speech and language delay or disorder. This program combines highly specialised education and specialist health services to help develop speech and language skills through repeated opportunities to experience, explore and discover concepts vital for effective speech and learning.
Talkabout programs are offered for children aged 18 months to 6 years. To join the program, children need to turn 2 years of age before June 30 in the year of entry into the program.
Talkabout has a team-based approach to helping your child achieve their speech and language goals.
The team includes:
Your child and your family
Talkabout Teacher and Assistant
Speech Pathologist
Occupational Therapist
Psychologist
Family Liaison Officer
Talkabout 5 is a curriculum-compliant school program that is supported by therapists who work directly with children in the programs. This unique combination of education and therapy is a valuable collaboration that allows our teams to work together to achieve excellent outcomes.
Children take part in small group play-based activity stations facilitated by an early childhood teacher, education assistant, speech pathologist or occupational therapist. Class sizes are very small and high staffing levels allow for intensive small group and individualised work on focus areas.
The Talkabout 5 program is for children in their pre-primary year who have a speech and language delay or disorder. It runs for two full days per week and is available on a Monday / Tuesday or Thursday / Friday. Children attend their mainstream pre-primary for the remainder of the week.
The program focuses on:
Pre-literacy and early literacy skills
Social skills
Fine and gross motor skills
Sensory integration
Every child acquires speech and language skills at their own rate. However, generally speaking there is a common timetable for when we can expect to see a child reach certain milestones.
